Kaunas ‘Marries’ Zalgiris
Kaunas City Council has made an important decision to become a BC ˇalgiris shareholder. The economical aftermaths of this decision are expected to be of crucial importance for the glorious Lithuanian team in preparation for a better season in the Euroleague.
KAUNAS (July 18) – For many years ˇalgiris and its star players – Stepas Butautas, Modestas Paulauskas, Sergejus Jovaia, Arvydas Sabonis, Rimas Kurtinaitis, Valdemaras Chomičius, to mention just those best known internationally – were the most important banner bearers of the Kaunas community all over the world.
The community’s emotional participation and response to the team’s ups and downs have ever been very immediate and keen, but the direct involvement of the City into the team’s activity has never been so intense as it might become very soon.
In fact, today the City Council has accepted the team’s tender and will acquire 35 percent of the BC ˇalgiris shares. Even though the City will only spend a token one buck to become a ˇalgiris shareholder, the Council has committed itself to contribute seven-digit inputs to the team’s budget every year for at least a five-year term. The decision has been warmly welcomed by the country’s basketball community who now are looking forward to positive changes in the team’s roster and better performance in the Euroleague, after a period of austerity the team was living through lately because of various reasons.
It is now strongly expected that Arvydas Sabonis, who is one of the team’s shareholders, will respond to the City’s noble gesture to help the glorious Kaunas team and will fulfil his promise to return to ˇalgiris as a player by the end of his career as soon as this fall.
