Open-doors to the US? or
I had the assingment about the US immigration and I got one my classmate’s work to look at and write my comments. you know i was shocked! this guy did not have the clue what he was talking about!!!
I was thinking about such situation a lot and it would be really fascinating to know where the open-doors policy led America to.
Anyway this is my opinion.
That day when the government decided to approved the open-door policy would be the worst day in all American history. Even worse than September 11.
It would have an affect to every single american’s life. People from all over the World would start coming flooding in the United States. The population would approximately double within a year.
The cities would be crowded.
People would have trouble finding a place to live. Prices of the apartments and hotel rooms would increase day by day (literaly). More and more people would start living on the streets.
All immigrants would look for the jobs (The government would let them work, wouldn’t they? Don’t limit my food over a free lunch)
Wages would go down due to competition among the employees (the cheap work force)
Unemployment would increase from year to year.
I suppose after a while the United States would disapear as a nation because of the huge amount of different nationalities and languages. Everyone would call himself American.
I know that was more formal 'cause it’s my homework for Monday English class. Ok guys have fun on weekend.

OPEN DOOR POLICY
Series of diplomatic notes to Britain, Germany, France, Russia, Italy, and Japan that were proclaimed by Secretary of State John Hay in 1899. The policy was aimed at preventing the major trading powers of the world from colonizing and dividing China into trading regions. After the fall of Korea to Japan in 1895, most of these powers had established "spheres of influence" along the Chinese coast in order to offset feared Japanese aggression on China. After the U.S. victory in the Spanish-American War, the U.S. moved to guarantee that U.S. exports would not be banned from China by discriminatory tariffs. After the "Boxer Rebellion" of 1900, the Open Door was extended to include a promise of U.S. support for the integrity of Chinese territory. The Open Door policy was used by President Theodore Roosevelt to justify his arbitration of the Russo-Japanese War in 1905. When Japan invaded Manchuria in 1931, the U.S. considered it a violation of the Open Door.
The Open Door policy has taken on a new meaning since, hasn’t it?..
Well, I don’t know many facts or statistics, but the doors to the US have always been open. Just after September 11 has the government been more critical of whom they let in.
Population in the US is continually getting larger. According to the last US census, which takes place every 10 years, approximately 33 million were added to the numbers between the years 1990 and 2000. (Total population in 2000 was about 281 million).

But the numbers are more drastic when compared to the numbers from 1930.
The population then was at 122.8 million. (Again, now it’s at 281.4 million).

People do have a hard time finding a place to live. Costs are going up. However, because of tourism being almost destroyed, hotel costs are probably the lowest they can be. And due to the hardships, difficult financial times, unemployment is at 5.7%.

But America is made up of people from all over the world. The only people who are truly native are the Native American Indians. Every single other person living in the United States has roots from some other country. Statistics show that one out of ten people in the States were born elsewhere.

There are probably more languages and nationalities here than probably in any other country in the world. (My assumption; not fact). Those with Irish roots say that they’re Irish American. Those with Lithuanian roots say they are Lithuanian American, etc. “Melting pot” was the phrase used to describe the various immigrant groups all blending together in one nation.

I altogether agree with your “open-door policy” definition but my idea was quite different.
We had a discussion in class about people who die trying to cross a border between the US and Mexico, and a question was “should the government change the Immigration Laws and let anyone immigrate to the US?”
Don’t look for articles or other information in websites. You don’t need any statistics. Just think about it. If anyone came to the US whenever one wanted… No visas, no period limits.
Ok there is no point for me to repeat that. I said everything what i wanted to say in my previous msg.

Oh, I guess I misunderstood before. Thanks for your explanation. I thought you were writing more about factual events than hypothetical.
Yes, people try very hard to get into the US from Mexico. However, I think the situation has improved drastically in Mexico - with President Fox, that it is not as critical to leave for many. (Note - “as critical”, but still critical).
Ah, if visas were not required? I think many people are seeing that, at least in today’s economy, terrorist threats, etc., people would not be swarming to come, because the trees where money grows have been chopped down a long time ago. Even many Lithuanians are moving back to Lithuania. Hopefully, situations will change and economy will improve - soon.
