Van Gaal happy with performance
Louis van Gaal was satisfied with his team’s performance against Atletico Madrid tonight, whilst regretting the number of chances they failed to put away.
“We played good attractive football, made plenty of chances and entertained the fans. We just need to put away our chances, but at least we’re creating opportunities to score. I think we deserved a win, but it’s quite simple in football: if you don’t score, you don’t win. You can’t train players to score, it’s just a matter of instinct and luck. We defended well too. They only had about three chances in all the game. We pressed them and they were a bit lucky to take a point I think. I told Luis Enrique after the game that that was his best game so far, not just for the goals, but also for the way he played overall. He made a great contribution to the team and kept his position well. I took Saviola off because he’d picked up a lot of knocks and I thought Riquelme would hold the ball up better than my other option, Geovanni.”
