Best Places for Outdoor Activities
Live Where You Play

Love the outdoors? Can't wait for the next chance to go sailing on the lake or hiking in the mountains? Don't suffer through the long wait until the next vacation. Move to a town where your favorite outdoor activities are just minutes away all the time!

We looked at cities and towns with easy access to popular outdoor activities. We came up with a list of ten that rated high not only in closeness to outdoor activities, but also offered a balance of the best in education, housing, jobs, health, and arts and entertainment.

If you want to find the city that best fits your individual desires, you can set your own customized criteria and we'll show the best matches for you.

Burlington, Vermont.Vermont's largest city, this beautiful spot located on Lake Champlain offers a rich and diverse array of year-round outdoor activities. Burlington's waterfront offers an eight-mile recreational path for biking, running, walking, or skating. In summer, residents enjoy swimming, fishing, sailing, or other boating activities. Average high temp in July is a mild 81 degrees F. When the temperatures go down in the winter, outdoor activities abound: ice fishing, ice boating, cross-country skiing, and ice skating, not to mention the city's Winter Festival and Mardi Gras events.

Home to six colleges and universities, Burlington offers easy access to education. Housing is affordable and home appreciation is good. Burlington boasts a very low violent crime rate and quality healthcare. Predicted future job growth is very good. And cultural amenities are many: theater, dance, music, and world-class restaurants.

Missoula, Montana. Looking for a small town with sophistication? This is the place to move if you want both big-city amenities and out-and-out wilderness. You'll find city attractions such as restaurants, shops, galleries, museums, theater, and a symphony. But take just a step out of town and you'll be surrounded by millions of acres of national forest, wilderness, and recreation areas, where you can go hiking, camping, fishing, biking, white-water rafting, and skiing. Birdwatchers can go to the Lee Metcalf Refuge to observe a wonderful variety of birds during the peak migration times of fall and spring.

Located on the Clark Fork River next to parks and hiking trails, Missoula offers affordable housing and good health care. Violent crime is low and future job growth is rated very high. Missoula is home to the University of Montana, and you'll find coffee houses and bookstores nearby. Any bad news? Missoula averages 183 days with temps below freezing. But if you love winter sports activities, you'll be happily enjoying the outdoors.

Laramie, Wyoming. You can find a combination of western heritage and college-town charm in Laramie, nestled in a valley between the Snowy Range Mountains and the Laramie Range. Residents enjoy outdoor activities in nearby Medicine Bow National Forest and Thunder Basin National Grasslands: skiing, snowshoeing, boating, cycling, and camping. Fishing enthusiasts will find many opportunities, ranging from lakes on the plains to mountain streams.

What else is good? Laramie is home to the University of Wyoming, which sponsors cultural and sporting events in the area. If you live in this Old West-style town, you can expect low property taxes, good public schools, affordable housing, and clean air and water. When you're not out enjoying outdoor activities, you'll find plenty of opportunities to immerse yourself in the history and culture of the American West, and go to a variety of antique shops, restaurants, galleries, and historic buildings.

Hanover, New Hampshire. If you move to this town, you'll find a wealth of outdoor adventure in a beautiful and varied natural landscape. Hundreds of rivers, streams, ponds, and lakes offer canoeing, motor boating, rowing, sailing, and swimming. In winter you can go downhill and cross-country skiing, and figure skating. Residents enjoy well-maintained roads and highways, even in snow season. Since the area around Hanover offers a special combination of small urban environments with quiet villages and open spaces, you can choose to live in town or out in a rural area. Families heading outdoors can also find campgrounds, picnic areas, and hiking trails.

Hanover is a small town with a growing population and a robust economy. Only two hours from Boston, it is home to Dartmouth College, the ninth oldest college in the nation, with its highly regarded libraries and schools, including graduate and adult education programs. What other attractions does Hanover have? Affordable housing, comprehensive medical services, and specialty shops and restaurants. Residents generally enjoy a slower pace, a low level of crime, noise, and pollution, and clean air and water. What more could an outdoors enthusiast ask for?

Grand Rapids, Michigan. Outdoor activities and the arts both take a prime place in this outdoor town. Grand Rapids is where artist Nina Akamu made Leonardo da Vinci's dream come true of creating the largest horse sculpture in the world. For those who want to get outdoors, Grand Rapids offers fishing, boating, sailing, canoeing, rock climbing, and skiing. Residents are only minutes away from the sandy beaches of Lake Michigan.

Host to the Grand Rapids Festival of the Arts each June, Grand Rapids offers many cultural amenities: concerts, museums, opera, symphony, ballet, theater, and restaurants with international cuisine. Excellent educational opportunities abound at the more than a dozen college and universities. Grand Rapids has a low unemployment rate, a growing economy, and a safe atmosphere. Housing is very affordable and numerous medical facilities offer good access to quality health care.

Close to the Big Outdoors

Madison, Wisconsin. Resting on the shores of four scenic lakes, this Midwest town offers many parks and recreational opportunities. You can find cultural and educational amenities as well, including performing arts groups and theater companies. Noted for its large medical complexes, Madison offers excellent health care. Housing costs are moderate, but property taxes can be high. Projected job growth is very good.

Several outdoor recreation destinations are nearby Madison, offering hiking, canoeing, backpacking, fishing, swimming, and skiing. Very low temperatures and long winters might not be attractive to those who love the warm sun. January temps average 8.2 degrees F. On the other hand, those low temps mean that winter outdoor activities, such as skiing, ice skating, and snowshoeing are available many more days of the year.

Gainesville, Florida. A mecca for runners, Gainesville boasts a tradition of trails for running. It has more runners per capita than almost any other city in the U.S. This is the city where Dr. Cade brewed the first batch of Gatorade and the site of Gatornational drag races each spring. But runners and cyclists aren't the only outdoor enthusiasts who love Gainesville. Residents also enjoy cave diving, fishing in six freshwater lakes, swimming, scuba diving, and sailing. Gainesville has its own urban forest with a canopy coverage for 60% of the city.

Gainesville boasts a 280-acre wildlife sanctuary and a nature park within the city itself. Nearby are many freshwater springs and lakes, with clear water and white sands, where you can go camping, swimming, and canoeing. Gainesville has much to offer in arts and entertainment too: drama groups, theaters, performing arts groups, concerts, museums, and restaurants. A Spring Arts Festival is held every year in downtown Gainesville. As the state center for medical research and treatment, quality healthcare is readily available. Jobs center around the university and agriculture. Housing costs are affordable and the unemployment rate is low.

Tucson, Arizona. You can count on the sun as your companion for outdoor activities in this town. The sun shines 287 days of the year. Tucson lies in a sunny valley with mountains all around, where you can go hiking, backpacking, fishing, biking, camping, horseback riding—even hot-air ballooning and skydiving. If you still have energy left when the sun goes down, Tucson's nightlife can keep you hopping, with live music, theater, ballet, opera, and symphony.

Tucson is a bustling modern city, yet offers a casual lifestyle and a slower pace. It offers comprehensive medical facilities and an affordable cost of living. With low housing costs, low unemployment rate, and a growing economy, Tucson offers both abundant outdoor activities and a great place to live.

Boise, Idaho. Located on the Boise River, this city is nicknamed the "City of Trees." Just an hour's drive away lies the Boise National Forest, with 2.6 million acres of beautiful wilderness. Outdoor activities include cross-country and downhill skiing in the mountains, fishing in alpine lakes, hiking in the foothills, and float trips or whitewater rafting on the rivers. If you have tired muscles after all that exercise, you can soak away the pain in one of many hot spring pools in the national forest.

Boise boasts the benefits of a metropolitan city too. The capital and largest city in Idaho, Boise has a growing economy, with a forecast of excellent job growth. You'll find good medical services, affordable housing, and a low violent crime rate. If you're interested in cultural activities too, you'll find several museums, ballet, opera, and a philharmonic orchestra. A Boise River Festival is held each June.

Portland, Maine. Located in southern Maine, Portland is fast becoming known as a great place for outdoor activities. It combines the charm of a small town with the cultural activities of a large city. Perched on a peninsula looking out onto Casco Bay, Portland lies within 15 miles of a range of country and coastal landscapes. Outdoor enthusiasts will find an array of activities: canoeing, hiking, fishing, birding, whitewater rafting, skiing, sailing, mountain climbing, and cycling. In the greater Portland area are 100 miles of nature and walking trails. Residents can go jogging on trails with fantastic views over the water.

Portland boasts a wealth of historic and cultural attractions as well as opportunities to play outdoors. The Downtown Arts District offers a symphony, theater, clubs, restaurants, and movies. You'll find mild winters and cool summer breezes here, with over 200 sunny days per year. Portland offers affordable housing and good access to health care. Portland is especially attractive to water enthusiasts, with its many opportunities for canoeing, boating, sailing, and sea kayaking.
