Political situation in Lithuania these days

Mass media in LTU seems to be crazy the last days [at least newspapers]. No one even tries to defend R.P. However nothing’s proved yet Nekaltas I don’t know if he’s guilty or not Nekaltas but I suppose that media is too cruel Kanda everything seems to be only one sided. However… a coin (as well as almost every story Liežuvis) has two sides Taip
What do you think about all this ??? Nekaltas Kava

my opinion about that is negative…i think that R.P. got into a big big trouble…he got into a bed company…he shouldn’t consort with Borisovas…BlogaiKandaPavargęs i hate R.P. he bring shame on Lithuania…on us! PiktasIgnoruojuPavargęs

mani politika neintresee, tapeec es par to nerunaassu, un man nospl, auties :-p

gal galima būtų rišliau? Nekaltas

btw, would be intersting to hear what our ‘americans’ think about that

My opinion is based on strictly what I’ve read or heard from others… So it’s a very anti-Paksas biased opinion… Having Lolisvilli was terrible. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse or more embarassing… Pavargęs

do American papers write something interesting about Lithuania?

In Lithuania, key presidential advisers resign amid scandal over crime ties

VILNIUS, Lithuania (AP) — Several top advisers to Lithuanian President Rolandas Paksas said Thursday that they had resigned, further deepening a political crisis that began this month after allegations his office has ties to Russian organized crime.

Presidential spokesman Rosvaldas Gorbaciovas and foreign affairs adviser Alvydas Medalinskas said they could no longer work for Paksas in the scandal-ridden environment.

The scandal broke two weeks ago after a Lithuanian security department report linked the president’s office to alleged Russian mobsters, a revelation that jolted the ex-Soviet Baltic republic of 3.5 million residents that will join the European Union and NATO next year.

The 47-year-old president told journalists Monday he would not heed calls from some leading politicians and public figures for him to resign — though he said he would make changes to his staff at his palatial office in Vilnius, the capital.

Gorbaciovas and Medalinskas, who were not named in the report on organized crime ties and have not fallen under suspicion, were among six officials reportedly targeted by Paksas for dismissal. They appeared to have decided to pre-empt any such moves by resigning.

Paksas suspended his National Security Adviser Remigijus Acas on Oct. 31. Acas and businessman Yuri Borisov, who donated 1.2 million litas (US$400,000) to Paksas’ election campaign last year, were both named in the report as having underworld connections.

Lawmakers set up a special nine-member commission Nov. 3 to investigate the claims.

Paksas, a former stunt pilot champion, won a surprise victory in presidential elections in January, defeating overwhelming favorite and incumbent Valdas Adamkus.

Lithuanian conservative party seeks president’s resignation

VILNIUS. Nov 8 (Interfax) - Lithuania’s the Union for the Fatherland conservative party adopted a statement at its special congress on Saturday calling for the resignation of the country’s President Rolandas Paksas.

"Lithuanian President Paksas has no moral right to continue fulfilling his duties," the document reads.

The opposition Union for the Fatherland, which has nine of the 137 mandates in parliament, has accused Paksas of "bringing Lithuania dangerously close to the brink of ‘mafia dictatorship.’ The influence of ‘dirty’ money and Russia’s special services has reached a dangerously high level in Lithuania," the congress’s organizing committee told Interfax.

The party’s leader Andrius Kubilius, Lithuania’s former prime minister, told the congress that "it is necessary to resolve the biggest problem - the problem of the president. There is only one choice here: either [Paksas] or Lithuania. Lithuania does not need a president who lacks any moral authority."

Parliamentary Speaker Arturas Paulauskas and Prime Minister Algirdas Brazauskas have repeatedly said that it will be clear whether an impeachment procedure would be started against Paksas only after a provisional commission, which was set up to investigate the situation surrounding the president and his entourage, provides its conclusions. The commission is due to present its conclusions by December 1.

The dispute in Lithuania began about two weeks ago when the State Security Department made a number of materials public which gave rise to suspicions that the president and his national security adviser Remigijus Acas have links to international criminal groups and are influenced by foreign citizens and organizations of dubious reputation, particularly from Russia.
