Teaching strategies

Teaching strategies

I have got the task to teach grammar (tenses in particular). It is a 30-40 year olds group, they have a 3-month English course (2 lectures a week), and after that they are supposed to use correct English. Beside tenses they have to learn some more things, but tenses is the main problem so far. Their level is pre-intermediate.

Q:
How many lectures should I devote to tenses’ teaching?
How many tenses should I overview during 1 lecture (1,5 h)?
What sources (books, Internet pages) are the best?

Other advices will be very appreciatedMirkt

I suggest you to test their level and then you’ll see what you need to do…
Your lesson may consist of two parts: one for explaining tenses and other for reading, talking, listening etc.
You can use various literature from simple to sophisticated one…

I always try to know my student… and then I prepare exercises…

if you are interested in literature I can recommend some Mirkt

Thanks, akiryTEŠypsena
Their knowledge is different: some of them are quite good in grammar, but still I think I have to use the same material for all the group.

Labas I think there’re still two ways Cha cha you can choose a book for all of them and you can also make exercises yourself. The first variant would be much easier, but you can also have some difficulties Taip

You have to decide what literature (I mean grammar) you will choose: Lithuanian or English one (it also depends on the level of students).

good luck Labas

Any good grammar exercises online? Šypsena I’m the laziest teacher ever Liežuvis

I’m lazy now, too.

Three suggestions:

  1. Check the EFC summary topic (flyer topic).
  2. Check the EFC links
  3. Check google

If the level of your students is rather different then use some extra exercises for brighter ones while explaining the grammar examples to those who have some difficulties in understanding. I think both groups will be satisfied. What concerns number of tenses you have to take per lesson, well , to my mind you should devote two lessons for one tense and then at least one lesson for comparison, for example, Present simple versus Present continuous.

Yeap… It’s all so hard, unusual and scary for a new teacher Liežuvis Today I spent several hours searching for some good exercises Cha cha Guess what? I found only 2. And + one good idea. Is it always like that? I mean, the beginning? Nekaltas

LabasLabasWell, it’s defenetely not easy to start teacher’s career and this work is really really time consuming, but time brings experience and satisfaction sometimes. Only two good exercises after several hours ofsearching isn’t a fasinating result but it’s still more than nothing. Acctually you have to find the grammar reference you really like, there’s such a variety of them. And for the beginning - copy, collect and put into diferent files everything you find usefull and worth learning, it will save your time later.
